sustainability and HUMAN RIGHTS summer fellowship

The Center partners with the NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business to offer first-year MBA students a paid opportunity to work at a multinational company on human rights or corporate sustainability issues during their summer. Students will participate in a pre-internship training program and become deeply immersed in sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and human rights issues faced by their company through their summer internship.

Bloomberg LP (1 intern)
New York, NY

The Sustainable Business and Finance Group is looking for a Fellow to join our team. This is a strategy role encompassing business development, business planning, and the day-to-day execution of our cross-enterprise strategies in sustainability products and services. The Group reports to the management committee and has considerable exposure to multiple Bloomberg businesses. It focuses on new business areas such as Bloomberg ESG, Bloomberg New Energy Finance, and Bloomberg Businessweek, to name a few.

The Fellow will synthesize research and distill key points on the topic of sustainable investing, build excel models and conduct statistical analysis, and learn to use the Bloomberg Terminal functionality. Bloomberg is seeking a Fellow with a demonstrated passion for sustainability finance; financial research experience (preferably in capital markets or investment research); strong analytical, modeling, writing and presentation skills; quantitative analysis skills, “back-of-the-envelope” thinking and foundation in statistical techniques; and someone who is self-motivated and hardworking.

All candidates must be legally authorized to work full-time in the US and should not require visa sponsorship in the future.

IFC (2 interns)
Washington, D.C.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC)—the largest global development institution focused exclusively on the private sector in developing countries—and a member of the World Bank Group (WBG)—is seeking two internationally-oriented Fellows to join its Climate Business team. Climate business continues to be one of IFC’s key strategic focus areas. To further facilitate IFC’s target climate goals for 2020 and beyond, the Fellows would be responsible for the delivery of select projects, including but not limited to impact accounting and reporting of green bonds’ use of proceeds, conceptualizing and articulating a green equity strategy, preparing pitches for climate business clients in products such as green bonds and green loans, preparing a business plan for the replication and implementation of the Green Banking Academy, marketing a green buildings certification program, researching energy storage issues, and scripting and executing episodes of ClimateBiz, an IFC podcast. We are seeking Fellows with a passion for impact investing, research experience, strong analytical skills, advanced proficiency in MS Excel, and a genuine interest in the WBG mission.

Nespresso (1 intern)
New York, NY

Nespresso believes that a cup of coffee can deliver an extraordinary experience while creating greater value for society and the environment. Therefore, Nespresso is hiring a Fellow to contribute to the strategy and expansion of our sustainability program. 

Nespresso’s Professional (B2B) Division is launching numerous sustainability initiatives in 2019 – to embed sustainability in all aspects of the business while also engaging and inspiring others to be more sustainable.  The Fellow will work closely with the B2B Sustainability Marketing team in addition to B2C Marketing, and agency partners to develop overall program strategy, communication plans and operational executions to bring these initiatives to life.   The Fellow will also be responsible for identifying additional sustainability opportunities in the B2B segment and driving strategy for such.

Microsoft (1 intern)
New York, NY

The Fellow will work with Microsoft’s Human Rights team within Microsoft’s Corporate, External and Legal Affairs department, and in support of Microsoft’s AI and Ethics in Engineering and Research (AETHER) Committee, as part of the Microsoft’s ongoing human rights due diligence on artificial intelligence (AI). Collaborating closely with the Microsoft Human Rights team and AI specialists, the Fellow will be responsible for scoping and finalizing research on the most responsible and rights respecting business approach for Microsoft to engage in AI and military activities. The research will build upon key human rights priorities at Microsoft, for example due diligence and transparency on new and emerging risks; align the research with Microsoft’s human rights commitments and broader public policy positions; and create recommendations for new principles and processes. The Fellow will also be responsible for identifying additional priority opportunities for research on topics which could include facial recognition, public sector sales of AI technology, and other topics which should receive the most focus from Microsoft’s human rights leadership.

West Elm (1 intern)
Brooklyn, NY

The Fellow will work closely with the Vice President, Social Innovation and Consciousness on projects related to supply chain innovation, sustainability, and worker education and empowerment. The post will involve research, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and strategy development. Possible project may include circular economy topics. Headquartered in Brooklyn, NY since 2002, everything West Elm does is designed to make an impact in everyday life, from creating unique, affordable designs for modern living to its commitment to Fair Trade Certified products. In addition to home furnishings retail, West Elm operates West Elm Workspace in the commercial furnishings industry and recently announced its expansion into the travel and hospitality industry with the launch of West Elm Hotels. West Elm is a member of the Williams-Sonoma, Inc. portfolio of brands.

Graduate and Undergraduate Fellowships

We seek students who have a passion for social change and rigorous analytic skills. We offer paid, hands-on opportunities to currently enrolled NYU students, with priority given to Stern. Fellows have provided invaluable support for the Center by helping to conduct research and manage projects in all of our issue areas. During the course of their work with the Center, they have visited garment factories, interviewed experts and companies on human rights, and published their findings in blogs, magazines and newspapers.
