Firm-level approaches are necessary but insufficient in today’s globalized economy. Durable progress will require companies in each industry to abide by common standards and collectively respond to the most entrenched human rights challenges. Companies – even the fiercest competitors – must work together. We advance two models for improved collaboration. Multistakeholder initiatives can bring industry peers together with their stakeholders to develop baseline standards and devise governance structures for greater public accountability. While shared responsibility encourages companies, governments and international organizations to work together to devise collective solutions and fairly allocate the full cost of addressing the root causes of the most intractable human rights risks.
