Center Applauds Facebook Removal of Russian IRA on Platforms Positive Step

Today, Facebook announced that it removed 70 Facebook and 65 Instagram accounts — as well as 138 Facebook Pages — that were controlled by the Russia-based Internet Research Agency (IRA). The IRA has used Facebook to spread disinformation in the U.S., Russia, and elsewhere.
“Facebook has appropriately banned the IRA from its platforms,” said Michael H. Posner, director of the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights. “We applaud Facebook for recognizing that Russian disinformation online is a serious problem and for developing a specific response to this sustained Russian effort to inject political propaganda into American society, as well into Russian and European societies. We hope to see further progress from Facebook and other internet platform companies as they improve corporate governance, refine their algorithms to address harmful content, and increase human oversight of user-posted material.”
A former Assistant Secretary of State, Mike has been speaking with government officials internationally and working directly with tech leaders, including Facebook, to tackle this issue. He has also recently released a report on the persistent disinformation problem that offers tech giants actionable recommendations on solving the Russia problem.
