The Center takes on the most pressing issues at the intersection of business and human rights.

Respecting human rights while advancing business interests is one of the most important – and least understood – business challenges today. We believe that respecting human rights makes business more competitive and predictable over time. We pursue ambitious, practical change to improve human rights in business operations by:

  1. Identifying the business structures and incentives that negatively impact human rights. Through original research, we provide leaders and stakeholders with factual information about business practices at the heart of an industry and their impact on human rights.
  2. Determining options for action. Stakeholders within a given industry possess the experience, knowledge, and commitment to improve respect for human rights in business. Using the knowledge from our research, we help define standards for human rights performance in each industry and identify practical solutions for achieving them.

  3. Increasing business accountability for human rights impacts. We work together with businesses and other stakeholders to plan an ambitious vision for change, measure and track human rights performance and reward those that are leading the way.

  4. Empowering the next generation of leaders. Successful businesses understand their human rights risks and exposures and address them before they become violations. We aim to equip tomorrow’s business leaders with this essential knowledge through our course offerings at NYU Stern, opportunities for internships, access to executives from leading companies, and textbook.
